BOP Chilton Release Locator

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons custody after a federal case connected to Chilton County, use the BOP Inmate Locator rather than the Chilton County jail roster. No BOP prison was identified in Chilton County, but a local resident or case participant can still have a federal sentence. Federal release confirmation follows BOP records, federal court records, and supervision channels, not the county 48-hour jail release list.

BOP Releases and Chilton County

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the federal prison system. It is not a county jail and does not publish a Chilton County-style 48-hour release roster. A person arrested, held, or sentenced in a federal matter may pass through U.S. Marshals Service custody, federal court, and then BOP. If the person was temporarily housed in a local jail, the local record can show that local custody ended, but the federal release date is confirmed through the federal system.

BOP's locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. It warns that release dates can change due to sentence recalculations and federal time credits. That warning matters for any projected date. A release date shown by BOP is a federal custody fact, not a Chilton County jail release record.

Confirm a Federal Release

Use the BOP Inmate Locator when the case is federal. BOP can be searched by name or register number, depending on the information available. The release-confirmation rule from BOP's about-records page is especially useful: if the listed release date is in the past and no facility location is indicated, the person was released on that date and is no longer in BOP custody. BOP also notes the person may still be in another criminal-justice or supervision system.

  1. Search BOP by register number when available, or by name when the number is unknown.
  2. Compare age, race, sex, and other identifiers BOP displays.
  3. Look for a facility location and release date.
  4. If the release date is past and no facility is shown, treat that as no longer in BOP custody under BOP's rule.
  5. Check federal court, supervised release, ICE, or local records if another custody path may apply.

The BOP about-records page explains the released-with-no-facility-location rule shown in this screenshot.

That BOP rule confirms only BOP custody. It does not rule out supervised release, state custody, or immigration custody.

BOP Records and Contact

The public research for this page identified BOP locator access as the key federal release channel. If a federal release question needs more than the locator provides, the next steps are usually federal court records, counsel of record, probation or supervised release channels, or federal records processes. The U.S. Marshals Service explains that it handles federal prisoner custody from court-ordered custody until acquittal or conviction and delivery to BOP, but it does not provide a county-style released-inmates roster for Chilton County users.

If the person was held at Chilton County Jail before federal transfer, request the local jail release or transfer record from the sheriff. That local record shows the county custody event. It does not replace the federal release date.

Where Federal Releases Go

A federal release may lead to community release, supervised release, another jurisdiction, ICE custody, or another legal status. The BOP locator may say the person is no longer in BOP custody, while another agency still has a role. For example, a detainer can move a person from federal custody to state or immigration custody. A federal court docket or supervised release record can explain obligations after the prison release date.

County Jail vs BOP Release

Do not use the Chilton County 48-hour release roster as a federal prison release source. The sheriff's list is for releases from the Chilton County Detention Center. It can be relevant if a federal detainee was housed locally and left the jail for another authority. Once a person enters BOP custody, the BOP locator and federal court record become the better sources for prison release dates and post-release status.

The broader search path is covered on the Chilton County released inmates home page. Use it when the custody path is unclear and the person may have moved through county, state, federal, or immigration systems.

Federal Custody Timeline

A federal custody case may touch local records without becoming a local release case. The U.S. Marshals Service explains that federal arrestees are brought before a magistrate or judge and may be released or remanded to federal custody pending trial. After conviction, USMS delivers federal prisoners to an institution to serve the sentence. BOP then becomes the source for the prison location and release date.

If a federal detainee was temporarily housed at the Chilton County Jail, the county record can show when the person left that local facility. It does not show the end of the federal sentence. The BOP locator, federal court record, and any supervised release record are the better federal sources after transfer.

  1. Use the county jail record for a local housing or transfer event.
  2. Use federal court for the charge, sentence, and release conditions.
  3. Use BOP for federal prison custody and release date.
  4. Use ICE if a federal release appears to lead to immigration custody.

After BOP Custody Ends

BOP's no-facility rule confirms that the person is no longer in BOP custody, but it does not answer every post-release question. A federal sentence may include supervised release. Another jurisdiction may have a warrant or detainer. ICE may become involved in some cases. A state case can also exist separately from the federal sentence.

For that reason, a federal release check should not stop at one system when the facts show another agency. Build a custody chain: county jail if locally housed, federal court, USMS or BOP custody, BOP release date, then any supervised release or other receiving agency. That chain is more reliable than treating the Chilton County roster as the final federal answer.

Not in BOP custody is a federal custody status; it is not a statement about every other legal system.

BOP Search Details

When using BOP, record the exact spelling, register number if shown, release date, and whether a facility location appears. Those fields make later comparison easier if the person also has a Chilton County booking, an Alabama case, or an immigration custody issue. If the listed release date changes, BOP's own warning about recalculation and federal time credits explains why older notes may not match a later search.

If no BOP result appears, check whether the case was state rather than federal, whether the person was held pretrial and not sentenced to BOP, or whether the name search is too broad. The county release record can confirm only the local jail event.
